Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder

For the Royal Icing:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp meringue powder
  • 4-5 tbsp warm water
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cookies: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, and almond extract. Mix well.
  • Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out dough on a floured surface to ¼-inch thickness. Cut out heart shapes.
  • Place cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Let cool completely.
  • Make the Royal Icing: Whisk powdered sugar and meringue powder. Gradually add warm water and vanilla, mixing until smooth.
  • Divide icing into bowls, color as desired with gel food coloring, and transfer to piping bags.
  • Decorate cooled cookies with royal icing. Let icing set for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, chill dough before rolling to prevent spreading.
  • Use gel food coloring for vibrant icing colors.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container for up to a week.
