Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 lasagna sheets
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 2 cans (14 oz each) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups grated Parmesan
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella

Béchamel sauce:

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the meat sauce:
In a large pan, sauté the onions, garlic, carrot, and celery until softened. Add the ground beef and pork, cook until browned. Pour in red wine and let it reduce. Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, oregano, and basil. Simmer for 45 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Make the béchamel sauce:
Melt butter in a saucepan, stir in flour to form a roux. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  • Assemble the lasagna:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce, then layer lasagna sheets, béchamel, and Parmesan. Repeat layers, finishing with mozzarella on top.
  • Bake:
Bake for 30-40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground pork with Italian sausage for added flavor.
  • The lasagna can be made ahead and refrigerated, then baked when ready to serve.
  • Let the lasagna sit for a few minutes before cutting for cleaner slices.
