Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat until fully cooked, then drain excess fat. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and add diced onion. Sauté until translucent.
  • Stir in flour to create a roux, then slowly whisk in milk. Cook until the mixture thickens to form a creamy sauce.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish. Top with half of the ground beef, half of the sauce, and 1 cup of shredded cheese. Repeat the layers.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  • Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add diced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.
  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with your favorite melting cheese, like Monterey Jack or mozzarella.
  • This dish can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
